The Story
Alya Designs is an online shop based in Singapore. The founder, Islianah started the business by accident in 2008 after she took the plunge to resign from her comfortable 9-to-5 job. She was having an early quarter-life crisis and couldn’t bear the thought of dragging her feet to her drab office for the next 20 years. Islianah has always battled with bad tudung days. Deep down inside, she knew she had to do something about it. The last straw came when she was taking pictures with her friend outside. A blast of wind blew furiously in her direction, distorting the shape of the tip of her tudung. Gone was all that perfect arch of the headscarf that she meticulously tried to achieve every time she dons the headscarf. The unflattering shot of her imperfect tudung was unfortunately snapped. “Argghhh! There goes my tudung!” she grumbled as she scrambled to adjust the tip of her headscarf. Suddenly, an eureka moment hit her like a meteorite. She quickly came up with a prototype of something that could make the tip of the headscarf stand. She then coined it “Tudung Structure”. She got her hijab-wearing friends to try on the Tudung Structure. She had only 3 colours then – black, white and cream. They loved the Tudung Structure so much that they started requesting for more colours. As the sideline grew, she started to throw in more colours and modified the Tudung Structure to perfection. Soon after, friends of colleagues of neighbours and what-seems-like-the-whole neighbourhood got to know about the product and raved about it. Today, she is kept busy with daily orders and has since conducted numerous Tudung styling workshops at the requests of her customers. The business is a sideline no more. |  |
